Hi, my name is Marius Bakken. I am a two-time Olympic runner who has competed in races throughout the world. Recently, I decided to take a break from competing on an international level and pursue my life-long dream of becoming a physician so I enrolled in medical school which I completed in 2010. (I’ll explain why my decision to become a physician is important to you in just a moment.)

I’m just as proud to say that for two consecutive years I was the second fastest non-African 5k runner in the world with a 13.06.39 personal best.

Now you may not realize it, but getting to the level of international competition wasn’t easy for me. I don’t consider myself to be a naturally gifted runner. I didn’t wake up one day ready to compete on an international — or even national — level either.

In fact, I started out as an ordinary guy who loved to run.

And because I loved to run, it was only a matter of time before I wanted to compete against other runners. In order to become a faster runner, I’ve spent many years training hard to become a faster runner.

That was before I discovered that training hard isn’t enough.

Training hard is okay but it’s even more important to train smart instead.

It was only a matter of time until I made an amazing discovery…

Fast forward to the summer of 2005. A friend of mine named Martin Samdal asked me for some advice. He had already reserved his spot to compete in the upcoming New York City Marathon.

In fact, it was going to be the first ever marathon that Martin had ever run.

The problem is, he had done little or no training over the summer. Now he was about 12 weeks from having to run in the actual event and was starting to feel a little overwhelmed.

Like many new marathoners, he wasn’t sure how to go about training properly. He was confused about what he needed to do so that he was in peak condition on race day.

In other words, he needed a field-tested and proven plan!

I took some of the best Kenyan and Italian training techniques I knew and quickly wrote up a training schedule for Martin. As I handed the schedule to Martin I thought to myself, “This is better than nothing. At least it gives him a good plan he can follow without hurting himself.”

Honestly, I had some serious doubts about how well Martin would do. After all, he was closer to being a coach potato than a world class Kenyan runner.

You can imagine my surprise as Martin dropped almost 20 pounds during those 12 weeks of training.

But that was just the tip of the iceberg.

Competing in his first ever New York City Marathon, Martin ran a 2:58:52!

In fact, during the last 6 miles of the race — when most marathoners are running out of gas — he passed 252 other runners and grabbed a top 600 finish.

All of this as a first-time marathoner.

I use to think this modern marathon training method only worked for the very best runners.

It turns out my Kenyan-Italian hybrid training system works for any type of runner… even an out-of-shape guy who needs help to have his best running experience ever. It works for even brand-new marathoners who want to finish their first ever race in style instead of shame.

In fact here are a few of the early “test subjects” on this program (Some of the names have been partially withheld at the runners request for privacy):

I quickly realized there was a limit to how many runners it was possible to personally train.

First, being in medical school has left me with very little extra time to help others.

Second, not everyone can travel to Norway to train… especially if they live somewhere else in the world.

How I went from 3:34:45 (Chicago 08) to 3:15 (Grand Rapids 09) with the 100 day plan :

The fact is, I already speak of your program to athletes, even in other sports, because I’ve been so satisfied with learning new things and improving significantly again. I ran in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on 18 October 2009 with a 20 minute personal best following your plan.

I trained hard for Chicago in ’08, targeting the 3:20 Boston time, running up to 60 miles a week, even doing hard intervals in the rain on the track in the dark by myself. But despite orthotics and ice baths after hard/long runs, I kept getting knee problems thanks to poor choices of workout distances and pacing: in 2008, I ran a great abundance of 7-11 mile runs, all in zone 2. (I didn’t know it was zone 2; I was just following what I downloaded for free from Runner’s World. And I got what I paid for!) So I was hurt, and burned out. I peaked way too early. I couldn’t imagine running as slow as a 9-minute mile. I thought hard effort was what I needed. I listened to some of the guys from the local running group who believed: “the only way to run faster is to run faster.”

With your program, I feel like I finally found exactly what I need: a scientific approach that combines zone 1 slow runs with high intensity tailored interval work. Of critical importance to me–since I need exercise to manage my fibromyalgia pain–I’ve avoided injury completely. (If injured, I struggle to exercise with the intensity required to manage my pain syndrome.)

I started eating vegetables for breakfast sometimes, to be like the Kenyans, and attained my targeted weight loss (from 168 down to 155) over four months’ time. I never bought the lipoic acid, but I considered it, based on your recommendation. I took magnesium once a night, at least after long runs, to replace this electrolyte, and never had any muscle cramps. All these were ideas from your 100 day plan.

My biggest progress in this training has to be the change in my half-marathon times. Last year, and even early this year, I was running 1:38-1:41, depending on the course condition (hills, heat, etc.). A month before the marathon and well into the 100 day plan, on rolling hills, but perfect weather, I ran 1:28:13. This was the first time I’d gotten a running percentile score over 70 since college.

Presently, I’d like to get a percentile score of 70 at all the distances. The 5K (upper 18’s) and 10K (about 39:00) seem quite attainable, either this fall or next spring. But a marathon of 3:03 presents a different sort of challenge. Since marathon training is quite demanding, and failing to make a goal is so disappointing, I want to be really thoughtful about setting a marathon target for 2010. The 3-hour mark is particularly monumental, (thanks, Lance Armstrong!) but a fair stretch from where I’m at.

Running the 1:28 half this year I felt that a 3-hour marathon was possible for me. I’m prepared to pay for your next e-product, if it comes out, on moving the next 15 minutes on the marathon!”

Especially the combination of a running schedule and tutorials of the basic training ideas and other elements which provides insights on how and why the schedule build up the way it is. It bothers me that I wasted my own opportunity to become a star player that had all the recruiters drooling over me.  But instead of sitting around and feeling sorry for myself (what good would that do!) I decided that I would do everything I could do to make sure other athletes didn’t end up in the same situation as me.

So I dedicated myself to helping athletes reach their full athletic potential by giving them the proper training to achieve it.  When it comes to basketball it is no secrets that having a huge vertical leap is one of the most important athletic skills you can posses.

I mean, just think about it.  If you can jump higher than your opponent it allows you to get your jump shot off, grab rebounds, block shots…

And of course, be able to throw it down and get the crowd going crazy! (c’mon, who doesn’t dream of doing that!)

With that in mind I set out to compile the most effective and gravity defying vertical jump program possible.  I researched tons of different programs, browsed research articles, looked through training charts, analyzed what worked and what didn’t and after months of research I came to a startling conclusion…

There were 3 main problems I continually saw when I looked at the training most athletes were using in their vertical jump training…and these mistakes were absolutely killing their results!

The first mistake I saw was that athletes were only focusing on the large muscles involved in jumping. It’s no secret that you need to be working on your quads and calves…but by only focusing on a couple muscles you will never reach your full jumping potential.  It just won’t happen!

You will hit a plateau and your vertical will go stagnate.  To break through this plateau and take your vertical above it you MUST target all the muscles that are critical for jumping. When you do, you are then able to squeak out those extra inches that can be a real difference maker.

The second mistake I continually saw with athletes vertical jump training was that they were training in the incorrect “mode”. This is a huge problem because even when some of the athletes were using the correct exercises, they were still getting lackluster results.  But when I looked at their workout it was clear the problem was that they were not training in the proper mode.

See, when you train you are either working your muscle endurance or you are working your muscle explosiveness.  Now muscle endurance is great if you are a long distance runner but not very helpful if you are looking to increase your vertical jump.  To increase your vertical jump you need muscle explosiveness.

Think about this…Do you want to be able to jump continuously for 20 minutes or do you want to be able to explode off the ground quickly and high? Then you need to focus on muscle explosiveness and kick that muscle endurance training to the curb!

Let me put it another way…Does a long distance runner train by running sprints…NO!  Does a sprinter train by running 20 miles everyday…NO!  A long distance runner needs muscle endurance and a sprinter needs muscle explosiveness.

But more importantly..A basketball player looking to increase their vertical jump MUST train for muscle explosiveness.

The third mistake I found was the biggest mistake of all and the biggest cause of minimal vertical jump gains. When it comes to vertical jump training there are 3 main training styles..Plyometrics, Weight Lifting, and Jumping Exercises.  Each of these training styles is effective to a certain degree.

But here is the problem…most athletes use only ONE of these training styles.   If you only use one then you are only going to get minimal gains!  In order to get maximum gains you need to incorporate all 3 methods of training into one single workout.

You need to take the most effective exercises from each training method and combine them into one easy to follow program. This way you get the benefits of each training method and maximum results.

So those are the 3 big mistakes that athletes make with their vertical jump training.  Avoid these 3 mistakes in your training and you are on your way to a massive vertical jump.

I just started my involvement with the book. I printed out everything. What I’ve read so far, however, is great and has really helped me out. Tips and tricks about the background of various menu items help tremendously to understand BaseCamp better.
A lot fo thing about BaseCamp could use a more user-friendly design. It is a bit stale.
But that would be up from Garmin. (For example, the left-and right-moving with the Logitech mouse wheel left / right switches, etc.) We all just become so demanding, right.
So thank you again for this great book and if I find something that is worth mentioning, you’ll get an email from me.

I answer a bit late, because my PC had a HD crash. Now the system is running again and also the Garmin topo maps could be reactivated. So far, so good.
Well, I have this Base Camp Handbook bought, thinking: for a Pdf file a juicy price. Now that I have read something into it, I see that it’s more than a few drought-written pages. Many still unknown for me, applications, tips and notes are shown, which I find very useful.
Unfortunately I do not have the time to concern myself intensively. So I slowly work my way through the manual and try to apply the demonstrated capabilities in practice.As far as I entered, I would like to say: It is a good buy, the Base Camp Handbook brings me something and is worth its price.
Otherwise I thank you for the nice contact, wish you and your families a “Good Time”, “Happy Holidays” and “A Happy New Year”.

Michael, I’ve found that the manual is full of info that I was unaware of. It has been quite useful. There are some awkward phrasings in the English translation but nothing that can’t be worked out. I think I’ll find it useful for some time to come.

First of all my apologies for not getting back to you earlier. Kind of busy here…

Wel, the first impressions are very good indeed. Because of being too busy I have not done very much yet but the first attempts to use the software (by following the manual) are succesful. The one thing I have appreciated a lot is a decent explanation of the various ‘units’ in the software. Most of us do know that Microsoft Word is about text (well hopefully so) and that Navigation software is about … well navigation.

However, not knowing the difference between waypoints, tracks and routes is a handicap to start with. I found it very useful to read about those before even starting to use the software. The manual clearly demonstrates that the author – yourself in other words – has taken the time to look into the head of the first time reader/user.

Excellent work but have not had the chance to fully dig into it. Dark and cold wintermonths are on their way so it won’t be long anymore.

You see, on one hand, I had accomplished my goal of playing college sports… but on the other hand, I had no CLUE how to get faster. I was simply doing the flavor of the week I found in magazines, on TV shows, and in books and videos, probably similar to what you are doing now!

Much to my dismay, I discovered that sport coaches also knew very little about speed and agility training either. They were using the same books I had found and then expected some MIRACLE to happen.

What made things worse was that I didn’t really care to learn from those successful in improving speed. All I wanted to do was workout and figure this speed thing out myself.

Having struggled during my playing days and having limited knowledge (and being reluctant to learn) led me to give in and find an outside source of information.

It was then I finally admitted to myself that my passion for coaching and showing athletes how to run faster was never going to be fulfilled if I didn’t have the right knowledge.

If it wasn’t for a speed clinic program I bought, I would never have gotten my start in training others, who knows if I’d still be here today.

I read and watched thousands of pages and hundreds of hours of video to learn from others. I’d stay up late at night learning and testing my knowledge of speed training that actually works!

I ran my first clinic of 40 young athletes and from there, never looked back. Hundreds of young athletes sought out my training clinics and camps each year. Just starting out, I wasn’t sure where to go with my programs. I started out doing one day a week camps. The kids got faster and saw results, but I wasn’t happy with the results. I knew things could get better.

Then it finally hit me in 2005. I came across a coach who had helped a dozen athletes from their teenage years reach the Olympics. Over 10 athletes in one group!! How many youth teams have you seen take that many athletes and make it to the highest of all competition in their sport?

This coach knew his stuff, and it obviously worked. I also picked up some other important techniques and methods along the way. I was able to fine tune my program using these principles and techniques, and it was obvious, I had finally created a program that took ordinary youth athletes into faster, more athletic kids.

And it seems that somehow in the hustle and bustle and this new training market for athletes, most parents and coaches are completely missing the mark by a WIDE MARGIN.

And here’s exactly the strategy…

It focuses on all four most important areas of jump training (Strength, speed, movement efficiency and nutrition) unlike some popular programs out there and other gimmicks that promise to improve your vertical with plyometric exercises only (that doesn’t work!)

It is centered around Rate of Force Development training – An athlete’s ability to develop
maximal force in minimal time ultimately determines how high they jump, how fast they run, and how successful they are at their sport. (No other program does this and it is a grave mistake!)

Phase 1 is a high-volume/high intensity phase. You will be doing a combination of strength training and plyometric training. This is called complex training and is, hands down, the most effective way to increase your speed and vertical jump.

In Phase 1 you can expect the following:

Targeted Rate of Force Development training – this kind of training is responsible for adding 4 – 6 inches to an athlete’s vertical jump in only 4 weeks of training. It will very quickly make you a superior athlete. The best athletes on the plant (Michael Jordan, Russell Westbrook, Young Kobe, etc.) are masters of Rate of Force Development.

Increase in Tendon Stiffness – the highly advanced plyometric exercises that we do (I got these exercises from the workouts of Olympic jumpers and sprinters) will increase your tendon stiffness and ability to absorb force. Why is this important? Athletes, especially high-level athletes, are able to absorb tons of force (when running to do a jump) and then exert it back out into the ground to get themselves 40+ inches off the ground. This is all because of very stiff tendons that can take in that force. You will be doing those same exercises that increase that stiffness.

Your Type 1 (Slow Twitch) muscle fibers will start to act like Type 2A (Fast Twitch) muscle fibers. It’s impossible to change your muscle fibers (you can’t go from slow to fast twitch), however, you can have your slow twitch fibers start acting like fast twitch fibers. This is 100% possible and I am a testament to that. I was born 90% slow twitch and was an excellent mile runner and bad jumper. With the correct training, I made my slow twitch muscles start acting like fast twitch muscles. And guess what? Now I can run the 100-meter dash in 10.5 seconds and jump 44 inches. You will see an increase in neural drive and nervous system strength because of the high intensity and highly explosive exercises you will do throughout the program.

Phase 1 is also when most of your muscle growth happens, due to the ‘Growth training sets’ you will be doing for weightlifting exercises.

Unlike the Phase 1, where our main goal is to build muscle, develop elite high-level rate of force development, and get super strong, Phase 2 will tone down the volume quite a bit so that you can recover.

During this phase, your body will feel fresh, strong and springy. Also, in this phase you will start incorporating much more functional jumping exercises.

In Phase 1 you will do tons of high level plyometric exercises.

In Phase 2 you will do those same plyometric exercises but less, and then start throwing in functional jumping exercise that will help you master the technique and movement of the one-foot and two-foot vertical jump (highly important!)

Once your body recovers and you get your technique in place, you will start gaining inches like crazy! I’ve seen guys gain 5 inches in the first 8 weeks of the program and then add 8 more inches in the last 2 weeks. That’s when the real fun starts!
