The Biggest Workout Mistake

I’m about to explain the single most important factor in getting positive results from any type of workout or exercise.

The average person who works out at the gym or even at home looking to lose some weight and tone up probably does 3-4 sets of anywhere from 8-10 reps for 4-6 resistance training exercises, where they lift the weight and lower the weight. Then hop on the treadmill or cardio machine for 20-30 minutes to burn some calories. Then over time with the weighted exercises they try to do more reps with the same weight, fight to increase the weight or run faster or longer.Sound familiar? It does to me because this is how I trained and struggled for years, until I discovered the biggest workout mistake…

“Working Out Like This!!”

This common training principle is called progressive overload and sure it works to lose a few pounds at first, but only for a few weeks giving the illusion of progress. We then know it quickly comes to a screeching halt where your body quickly plateaus in weight loss and strength. The heavier the weight you try and lift or the faster and longer you try to run, the riskier your workout becomes and the less impact it has on your metabolism and the more impact it has on your joints. This type of training sets you up for failure and injury from the start.

Why Time Under Tension Matters

Time under tension just refers to how much time the muscles being worked are under stress. Basically, if you lift a weight and it takes you 30 seconds to complete that set, you have a total time under tension of 30 seconds. This time under tension factor then is also directly related to the tempo that you’re using. If you’re using a tempo of 2-1-3 for instance, which means it takes you 2 seconds to perform the lifting part of the movement, you’ll take a 1 second pause at the top, and then you lower the weight back down over a 3 second time period, your total time under tension would then be 6 seconds per rep.  Complete 10 reps total and you’ve just achieved a ‘TUT’ of 60 seconds.

Now, to calculate the total time under tension, you would then multiply your total TUT per set by the total number of sets you’re going to perform of that exercise, and then add together all the values for each exercise of your session. That then gives you the time under tension for the workout.

Sound a little confusing? Well, it is!

A Greater Metabolic Response

The first big benefit you’ll get from doing these MTT-20 ™ workouts that focus on time under tension times sets instead of reps is an enhanced metabolic response. The more time under tension you’re placing your muscles under, generally the greater your natural growth hormone release will be. Besides being the anti-aging hormone, your growth hormone is a fat burning hormone that acts directly on your fat cells telling them to release stored fat for energy.

Additionally, if you have a large time under tension combined with our progression phases of different daily and monthly workouts, you’ll also really jumpstart your metabolism and prevent plateaus since you are keeping your muscles challenged, all while creating quite a high degree of micro-damage in the muscles, therefore this will cause the body to expend more calories and burn fat once the workout is finished.

When metabolic resistance exercise is performed at a higher intensity in a specific way, the respiratory system and glycogen stores (sugar stored in your muscles) are challenged and depleted which in turn elevates your resting metabolism for many hours after exercise. Which means more calories are burned even at rest, also known as Afterburn.

Some studies show a metabolic elevation up to 42 hours after just one workout! The secret to this exercise method’s extreme effectiveness is the ability to increase your body’s metabolism far beyond its normal state. More specifically it is referred to as E.P.O.C. otherwise known as “excess post exercise oxygen consumption.” EPOC represents the process your body goes through in which energy is used to recover from exercise.

When you finish exercising, it takes time and energy for your muscle cells to return to resting levels. Energy is also needed to replenish depleted glycogen, protein and fat stores, and to remove accumulated cell waste. The more rebuilding that needs to be done, the greater the rate of EPOC, which in turn, means more calories from your body’s fat stores are being burned after your workout. While the primary factor in determining EPOC is exercise intensity and duration, there is also time under tension to consider. That’s where other forms of high intensity interval-training fails in comparison to MTT-20™. All of these factors working together creates the perfect metabolic storm for both increasing muscle definition and losing stubborn pounds and inches in a lot less time than traditional gym workouts and even regular interval training.

We spoke about exercise and diet and how humans lived 10,000 years ago compared to how they live in modern times. It was incredible, and just learning more about sleep dramatically improved my sleep.

I had been given the power to cure my insomnia using natural means that I was already in ownership of.

And so I manifested what I had learned and undertook a research mission. I put myself through trial and error until I completely understood every aspect of my environment and lifestyle that might possibly be affecting my sleep.

I also found myself in a rather unique position, Mark didn’t know me. He didn’t know that I’d never done it before. And from the way he’d asked, it was obvious that he thought I could do it.

I used a very basic relaxation script that I made up on the spot. I honestly didn’t know what to expect and when Mark started to respond to my suggestions I thought he was faking. I was starting to feel like a fool, and a fraud. But then I gave him a suggestion that transformed me from a nervous skeptic to a confident believer.

I told Mark that he was getting colder and colder.

His breath shortened and he began to shiver. He was wearing a short sleeve top so I could see his bare arms, and to my utter astonishment, within seconds of my suggestion, all of the tiny hairs on his arms stood on end and he got goosebumps!

WOW! I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. He was having a physiological response to a temperature change that hadn’t happened. His body was responding to my words as though they were real. It was amazing!

Next, I switched my suggestion from cold to hot, telling him that with each breath he was getting hotter and hotter. Again, within seconds of my suggestion he had a physiological response that can’t be faked. The hairs on his arms all lay back down, the goosebumps went away and he started to sweat.

He began pulling at the neck of his top, trying to fight the increasing heat. His face flushed bright red and beads of sweat were pouring from his brow. It was incredible.

Mark was obviously uncomfortable so I told him that everything would return to normal and his ‘symptoms’ faded away.

That day changed the course of the rest of my life. I went on to enjoy a very successful and lucrative career as a stage hypnotist and later a hypnotherapist. I wrote several books on hypnosis, developed training courses, and taught over 30,000 people how to hypnotize.

I have been studying hypnotherapy for about 12 months and have been a little bewildered at the amount of information and misinformation that abounds on the subject.

There are people online offering courses who seem to be academically accredited, some even have impressive initials behind their names such as BA. This could lead the reader to believe that the person offering a course has been educated up to degree level with a Bachelor of Arts but if you read deeper and do more research will find that Hypnotism and or hypnotherapy is not accredited by any government educational body and you do not need a licence to practice.

There are no university degree courses in the subject. There is no BA in hypnotism and the abbreviation in this case meant ‘British Association’. Was the term ‘BA’ suffixed to a name to deceive? Who knows.

It would seem that the best hypnotist are people that excel in communication and have a background in phycology, NLP and other related subjects.

I took to YouTube to learn more and that is where I came across video lectures/lessons by Stephen Hall. I have never seen any better content and the best bit is that it was free.

The thing that most impressed me about Stephen was that he was unafraid to demonstrate by using the viewer as a subject! Whatever level you are at I would highly recommend Stephen Hall as one of the best that I have seen to date. Stephen is also very approachable and I have already gained from his input and advice.

The explanation of the hand sticking exercise is really interesting, highlighting the language used and the actions that the hypnotist does to gain the required response.

I really like the car analogy with the driving instructor telling you how to drive the car and where to go.  That explains the role of the hypnotist really well.

You have immense knowledge and skill, not to mention confidence and enthusiasm and I am looking forward to working with you through this course.  I especially liked the ‘get out’ if the sticking doesn’t work as I think it is important for people to have that peace of mind that they cannot be made to do something against their better judgment.

After lesson 6, I decided to try the hand lock technique on my friend and it worked!

He asked me if I could put someone into a proper trance, I said no but gave it a try anyway. I made up the script as I went along and it worked!

I got so worried I couldn’t get him out of the trance so I woke him up straight away, then I put him in a trance again and made him believe his shoes had fallen off and it worked!

Just wanted to give you some feedback on the course. Now I did some of your course about 2 yrs ago and felt as though I’d learnt a lot from you. But about half way thru the course my email got hacked & I couldn’t remember the name of the course, so I never completed it.

Last year I did a 3 day hypnotherapy/hypnosis training course in London, it was very good but there was no physical practise which I feel I need to help with my confidence. Anyway on this course he (the trainer) preached that hypnosis isn’t real, it’s all make believe and the subject plays along due to peer pressure.

Although I do agree somewhat with that, I do feel there is much more to hypnosis/hypnotherapy than just peer pressure & placebo.

He also told me to throw away my salad cards & hypnotic language shortcut cards, he said they’ll confuse me & serve no purpose in hypnosis.

Last time I took your course, their was a part where you gave a script with subliminal suggestions. I read this script to my wife who was unaware there was any suggestions in the script, she thought it was just a relaxation thing, anyway she responded fully to every suggestion, although I can’t remember the script, I do remember she did things like rubbed her right eyebrow and her left ear (I’m not sure what else, but I think their were others).

I tried the same script on my friend who isn’t very suggestible (even finger magnets don’t work with him as he just fights it all the way, very very stubborn person) Although he didn’t respond to every suggestion there was one or two he did respond to.

Based on that I genuinely do believe their is such a thing as hypnosis. So the course I did left me a little bit disheartened, i decided to try & find your course again. All I could remember is you’re called Steven and had a Coventry accent. Anyway I found you and I’m really enjoying the course again.

I think the script writing sessions are excellent, gives a great foundation for hypnosis. I can’t believe it’s a free course, it’s worth it’s weight in gold!

This course has really helped me to grasp the whole concept of hypnosis. Thank you so much for putting it together. I’d love to take any other courses that you do.
