I was the skinny/athletic type naturally, so putting on muscle or having the genetics to get huge seemed completely out of the question.

Sports had been my life up to this point, basketball being my first love above all, but I peppered in some other sports here and there – baseball, football and track, just to test the waters – all without much success to where I “fit in” the best.

I was no stranger to hard work, but what I was truly scared of was my lack of confidence and getting girls to notice me.

Heck, I was a zit-covered, full-on puberty-stricken kid with nothing to offer. Being socially awkward and shy was only the beginning of my problems.

Just thinking about it gets me freaking embarrassed!

The Homecoming dance was vastly approaching and since DAY 1 of my high school career, I had my love-struck eyes set on this elegant and seemingly FLAWLESS girl from science class.

Yeah, she was a 10 – maybe more like 100 out of 10.

It just so happened that she was in 2 more of my classes too – SCORE 1 for Mitch!!! Cha-ching!

After building up the long-term courage to finally ask her to the big dance, I found out that she had
said “yes” to someone else.

It was OK though, she turned me down in the most positive of ways and reluctantly offered that I take her best friend instead- OH FREAKING JOY!

Avoiding the thought of being dateless for my first big high school dance, I agreed and went along.

The dance was fun, the music was loud, and I spent some time testing out my social skills a bit by meeting some new people in our group.

All seemed to go as planned until the “slow-dance” song came on. Nerves filled my body, sweat started pouring from my head, and my heart seemed to race like I just finished a 100m sprint at track practice.

Her date was nowhere in sight, so I figured now would be my one-and-only shot at this.

I can’t really tell you what happened during the next few minutes of my life as we stepped side-to-side, holding each other close and sharing a deep connection that I swear was sent directly from Heaven above…

The only thing that I truly know for a fact (I found out years later) was that I was shaking…like uncontrollably shaking…

Like she couldn’t focus on the dance because she thought I might be having a small seizure – shaking.

But hey! At the time I had no idea what was happening, so who freaking cares right? I was on cloud 9 and wasn’t coming down for a long time.

I went home that weekend a NEW MAN. I felt extremely confident about my performance and had a new hope for the future, seeing nothing but hearts in my eyes all the way up until Monday morning.

Oh that dreadful Monday morning…

Arriving fresh to school with my new Nikes, clean new hair cut and swag in my step, my only thoughts were to find her and let her know how I felt.

Rounding the corner to our first period science class, there she was – in a red and white dress, dirty-blonde hair draped around her shoulders, holding an Earth Science book and chatting with a friend.

Just as soon as I started to approach her, her “date” that had been seemingly absent for most of the Homecoming dance, suddenly appeared rushing down the hallway, grabbing her by her shoulders… and kissing her right in front of everyone.

My weak heart felt like it was going to explode at any second.

Sadness, heartbreak and anger seemed to fill my veins as I developed a look on my face that could probably pierce someone’s soul – or even burn through a wall like Superman…or this big dude’s fat, ugly face – one of the two.

I was SO SURE about what had happened at Homecoming.

I literally thought that I had successfully won over the girl of my dreams – and now, all of that was shot to hell in a single second.

She didn’t want the skinny, frail-looking and pathetic lab partner from science class. She wanted the buff, broad-shouldered football stud who was twice my size and then some…

How was there any hope for a guy like me?

Could I change her mind or prove myself in any way?

These questions seemed to pile up in my mind over the course of the day like a stack of unread books.

I skipped dinner and spent 3 hours straight in the small apartment gym where I lived.

The only time I had touched a weight prior to this was a 5lb dumbbell my mom had in the corner of the living room.

I had NO IDEA what I was doing. I had NO IDEA what exercises to do, or how to use the machines or even what muscles did what!

I remember laying down on the bench press in mental pain and anguish with tears rolling down my face, BROKEN.

As I picked up the bar, something unexpected and INCREDIBLE HAPPENED…

It was this very moment that I fell in love with building muscle. Even more than that, I fell in love with using my pain to produce something great – to use it not to hinder me, but to propel me forward.

In this moment I felt the most powerful thing a single person can feel: HOPE.

I had hope that I would never feel weak and scrawny again.

I had hope that soon enough I would be the ONE that girls chased after.

I had hope that the more muscle I built, the more confident I would become and the better my life would be!

No, those are thoughts of a weak man!

Think about it, it doesn’t matter if you can bench press 405 pounds or deadlift your house; Did your primary muscle contract maximally to create that movement in the first place, or did you just “loft” it up – bouncing the bar off your chest or “humping” the bar up to a locked-out position?

Not only is this advice for training with heavy weight useless if you can’t use it right, but it’s also opening up a Pandora’s Box of issues down the road for you, like horrible lifting habits (shifting tension where you DON’T want it), tight and/or weak opposing muscle groups, and potential injury.

Using heavy weights to recruit more motor units is only 1 TOOL in your toolbox of Mass Construction.

That’s a funny story, and one you’ll enjoy. It all started with some bodyweight calf raises on a footstool in my childhood kitchen next to the dinner table. I was 16 years old and obsessed with my vertical jump (basketball background).

A few weeks have passed and I am finally able to gather my thoughts and wrap my head around everything that has transpired as a result. As you know, I have been anticipating this event since the day you told me about it. Going into it I didn’t know exactly what to expect but given that it was your idea I knew it had FANTASTIC & FABULOUS written all over it! Good job on keeping all of the excitement to yourself until the day of the event! Again, “BIG Thank You” to YOU, Mitchie and Gary for all of your hard work and time put into making PowerTec a success. I am certain that this event will not be forgotten by me and the other attendees for more reasons than I can list!

First and foremost, I think it’s important to place emphasis on the guest list. You managed to gather many industry leaders and decision makers to be a part of this event, and while I can only speak for myself, I know that all of the competitors are grateful for the opportunity to be placed in front of them. Needless to say, I absolutely loved seeing you again, enjoyed meeting the judges, guests and all of the contestants. I have made some wonderful connections with people I heard so many incredible things about, finally met some of my Facebook friends in person, and I know that I have made some great, long lasting friendships that will only cultivate with time.

Moving on to the evening of the finale I don’t even know where to begin. The set up at Drai’s rooftop and the surrounding views were beautiful and put together with the atmosphere and an upbeat DJ made an ideal party combination. Runway, cameras, action! I will say however that the mermaids were the highlight of my night (putting aside all the male models walking around exhibiting their six packs in their swim trunks!). In a nutshell and without going into too much detail, there was not a dull moment throughout the evening.

The aftermath is more than I could have imagined. I walked away with 1st place in Short Fitness Model Division and 2nd in Overall Fitness Model Category which was a huge accomplishment and honor for me given that it was my first competition. As a result, I am now officially signed with Sports + Lifestyle Unlimited Agency and look forward to working with them on upcoming projects! I cannot express my excitement and gratitude for this opportunity. As if that is not enough, I am fortunate to have won photo-shoots with two amazing photographers with whom I have wanted to work with for quite some time. Aside of all that, I was able to network with several wonderful individuals and I hope to have the opportunity to work with them as I move forward with my aspirations.

Well, skimping on sleep has just as many serious health implications as eating a diet laden with processed sugars, dairy and gluten. Here’s 5 key risks you should be aware of:

Sleep deprivation has been linked to hypertension, increased stress hormone levels and irregular heartbeat.

Sleep deprivation alters immune function, including the activity of killer cells that fight off immunity, which means you are more likely to get sick with a serious illness.

Sleep deprivation affects the way the body stores and produces carbohydrates. This alters the activity of hormones that regulate appetite, causing us to crave more food.

Those with a sleep debt are 10x more likely to have an auto accident and other accidents in general. You are also more likely to make mistakes at work, which could be very serious if you are a doctor, pilot or machinery operator.

Lack of sleep affects mood. It makes us irritable and impatient and impairs concentration and focus. Being in this zone makes us unhappy and demoralized, affecting our relationships, work performance, exercise and eating habits. The long and short of it is that sleep is VITAL to our health, and not getting enough of it is a very serious risk.

I hit the wall of insomnia during my teens. I went through some stressful times, what with my parents breaking up, the stress of studies and the loss of a close friend.

By my twenties I was a walking zombie, which wasn’t helped by the fact that I was working nights to support my study. This compounded the existing sleep debt I’d built up, and by the time I was put on pills, I was at the door of mental and physical exhaustion.

Honestly, I thought I was going to die. That’s no exaggeration. I felt so unwell. I actually began to contemplate at what point the body would cease to function without sleep.

I was breathless, constantly fatigued, gaining weight, pale and suffering cold after cold.

The pills did put me to sleep, but as soon as I came off them I went right back to my old sleeping habits – a few hours a night, if that. I was totally lost, my body didn’t know when to sleep and could only sleep with meds. I was getting weaker and sicker.

I flunked college, lost my girlfriend and got depressed. I felt like crap and looked like crap.

I had to sort myself out before lack of sleep totally ruined my life. So I decided to take a stand, to take back control of my life and get a grip.

What the hell, I figured, I’m not sleeping anyway so why not use this time to try and crawl out of this ditch I’d gotten into.

In one inspirational act of defiance, I threw the sleeping pills down the toilet, went to the local library and began to use those sleepless nights to study.

I studied sleep through the ages and began comparing the way man lived 10,000 years ago to the way he lives today.

What I discovered was incredible.

Sleeping problems, as we know them today, only began to surface around 200-300 years ago; pretty much when man began living and eating dramatically differently to the way in which his body was used to.

Things got a whole lot worse when electricity came along, because man started sleeping at odd hours outside of his natural rhythm. And when the agricultural revolution took full pace, the changes to food, work and modern living that came with it began to seriously mess with our sleep.

And so here we are today, with 1 in 3 Americans suffering from some degree of insomnia, and 1 in 10 on sleeping pills.

It really is. I mean, how can something so natural have become so difficult for us?

Sleep is as natural as eating, and just as important to our health, yet we’ve neglected sleep so badly that we’ve drastically affected our health.

The knowledge I discovered led me to take drastic action. I began A-B testing my sleep, testing what effect particular aspects of lifestyle had on my sleep. My research uncovered six key areas that were affecting my sleep-wake cycle and causing insomnia, and quite simply, by improving these six core areas of my lifestyle and environment, I was able to cure myself of sleeplessness once and for all.

During my research, I learned about brain waves and how important the electrical currents of the brain are to the sleep process.

Brain waves must slow down in order for the brain to prepare to go to sleep, but because of our anti-sleep lifestyle, which includes artificial light, dietary stimulants and numerous brain-stimulating digital devices, the brain really struggles to slow down into low brain activity.

This is basically the primary cause of a bad night’s sleep; having an overactive brain at bedtime.

To help slow my brainwaves down, I began using special audio recordings called binaural beats. This is basically advanced meditation music that uses a process called ‘frequency response’ to entrain the brain into states of relaxation or deep concentration.

I first began experimenting with Theta frequency recordings, which produce a deeply relaxed state and are commonly used by meditators, and then with Delta recordings, which replicate the Delta wave production that happens in deep sleep. This began entraining my brain to release Delta waves around the time I wanted to go to sleep, enabling me to fall asleep faster and sleep deeper through the night.

By combining my six-step sleep methodology with this special music, not only did I start falling asleep faster and sleeping deeper, but I felt greater mental balance; less stressed, more productive and more focused during the day.

Needless to say I was overjoyed. I felt normal again. And after getting a solid 3-months sleep under my belt, my health completely restored itself.

I also managed to get another girlfriend (we’re now married), who, by the way, is Crossfit crazy, and responsible for finally getting me to commit 100% to the Paleo Diet, for which I am forever grateful!

  Hello fellow parents! Has this ever happened to you? You want to get in shape, and then something, some sort of event, causes you to pull the trigger and purchase a solution to your conundrum of body fat and/or lack of muscle mass.

Maybe you looked in the mirror and were just not satisfied,

Why the things you have tried in the past have NOT worked.

Why the things you tried in the past didn’t deliver the results you wanted:

You start going to the gym, you start a new workout plan, you start eating healthier, you start seeing some results, but then bam!

You’re on day 37 of your 90-day “body transformation plan” when, before you know it, soccer season starts. The kids’ practice times conflict with your workout time and you find yourself waking up at 4:00 a.m. to try to get in your 60-minute, 6-days-per-week, workout schedule. Somehow that 60 minutes per day, 6 days per week, turns into 0 minutes, 0 days per week.

You have your workouts all planned out. Then on Tuesday before you head out to the gym, your child asks for help with his or her math homework. If you’re like me, your schedule does not always work with the workout plans and schedules that fitness professionals put together.

Even if you have tried and failed at the gym on your own or with with other workout plans, this time around it is going to be different!

As a fitness professional I could write out an effective weight lifting plan in less than an hour. I could put together a series of exercises and techniques that are proven to work, backed by science, and validated by my own personal experience and my clients’ experiences.

But how would I know if that plan would work specifically for you?

That is why when I put together The Weightlifting Plan for Busy Moms and Dads, I took the time to craft a CUSTOMIZABLE workout system. A weight training plan that works for you and your busy schedule.

Cool! Then don’t be like the millions of people worldwide that have a gym membership, but are not getting the results that they want!

What if next January you did not have to make another resolution to burn fat and get in shape?

Imagine walking in the gym with confidence, energy, and a sense of accomplishment knowing that you have the best body you’ve had since high school. People are complimenting you on how good you look, including some of the people that are hitting the gym for the first time in months. They are asking you what your “secret” or “trick” is to getting those amazing results.

The real “trick” to seeing lasting results for a lean and fit body:   I’m full of all kinds of good tricks. They don’t call me Glen “Tricky Bones” Gosch for nothing. And so…

so…   I will show you another good trick that I know. (Totally just made that up*)   But before I tell you the trick, I have just one favor to ask: Stop falling for gimmicks!

 The truth is, a lot of the products you find out there can work. (“What Glen? You’re telling me that your competitors products work? What kind of a marketing idiot are you?”)   Here’s the thing about those other products though: They will work only if you have all kinds of extra time on your hands, can dedicate at least 1 hour per day, and will consistently have 6 days in a row where things like lack of sleep from waking up with a baby, soccer practice, homework with older kids, or other activities will never get in the way. Yeah, right!

Access to a gym with the following equipment: Bench, barbells, dumbbells, cable machines, leg press – all standard equipment in most big gyms. The “Squat Myth” has, for too long, left millions of men and women frustrated at their lack of progress, struggling to grow their behind.

And it gets worse. Not knowing how to train properly has left you with a problem – weak glutes.

Ignore those who say a strong, rounded butt is pure vanity. It’s a sign of strength and good health.

Weak glutes are often the “hidden” factor in most injuries, including poor posture, lower back pain, knee pain, hamstring strains, muscle imbalances and lower body injury.

Ever suffered a long-term injury that simply won’t go away no matter how much you treat the area of pain? It could be a cause of weak glutes.

A saggy or non-existent butt can be embarrassing. But when you’re denied a strong, round butt it’s a reminder every time you catch yourself in the mirror that your efforts are producing zero effects, leaving you frustrated and angry.

When your glutes lose strength, it affects your whole body. Other muscles are forced to compensate, causing imbalances and severe health consequences.

Everything flows from this area. Whether you’re walking, running, climbing, jumping, stepping, sitting or even just standing without moving, your glutes are involved. The stronger your glutes, the more efficient your movement.

Strengthen your glutes, and you will run faster, you will jump higher, you will throw harder.

You see, everyone BELIEVES they have powerful glutes. But often their weakness is masked by strength in other areas. As soon as you isolate the glutes… then the realization hits.

It’s hard to take when you work so hard.

Body builders who spend their days squatting, doing lunges and deadlifting go to pieces when I put them on glute-specific movements. They’ve built a mansion on foundations of sand.

After a few minutes of glute exercises, they’re floored.

When they discover how weak they really are, they can barely look at me. But it happens all the time.

Compare this to sprinters who train at The Compound. They have a laser focus on glute-specific movements. When faced with the same program, their glutes deliver raw, unbridled power and speed. If you want to understand how to explode your glutes, look at these guys.

The problem isn’t how hard you workout. It may not even be your genetics or your diet. It certainly isn’t your commitment, although it may feel like you’re trying everything and getting nowhere.

You see, it’s not your fault.

When we trust trainers with our bodies, we expect them to know what they’re doing, right?

But it turns out they don’t. They rely on routines based on decades-old research and training principles, instead of combining the latest science with, you know, REAL WORLD experience working with athletes.

The worst are Instagram fitness “celebrities” giving out glute advice based on a flawed understanding of human physiology.

They misunderstand the muscle. They misunderstand how to activate the glutes. They misunderstand fundamental training principles.

They don’t give you the complete picture.

(Sure, they may have a great butt… but they’re 20 years old, have never had kids, have great genetics and may be taking extra-curricular supplements. But, hey, let’s not mention that…)

Instead, you’re left disappointed when you don’t get the same results.

That’s why I had to speak out. To fight back against the misinformation and myths that some trainers keep pushing on you.

To understand why so many programs get it wrong, let’s look at the muscle.

The glutes are made up of three muscles, the Gluteus Maximus, Gluteus Medius and Gluteus Minimus. Each plays a role in stabilizing, supporting and mobilizing the legs, hips and lower half of the body.

Without getting too technical, there are three planes of motion glute muscles need to experience to grow.

If you want shapely glutes, you have to train all THREE planes of motion to get fullness – vertical, horizontal and rotational.

Most people do squats and deadlifts which are vertical movements. You still need to do lateral movements and twisting movements.

So you see why most programs fail because they don’t target all three planes of motion.

You also need to stress each muscle using different exercise strategies.

Here’s what complicates it. There isn’t one exercise that targets all three. To guarantee you target every part of each muscle you need three different exercise strategies in all three different planes of motion.

And that’s why glute-specific training is the key to unlocking their power…

To fully develop your glutes, your training needs to focus on two elements: 1) glute-specific movements and 2) targeting all three muscles, with all three exercise strategies in all three planes of motion.

By far, the biggest myth holding you back is that squats, lunges and deadlifts are glute exercises. They’re not. They’re leg exercises. They can activate the glutes incidentally, but they’re all about the legs.

If you want stronger glutes, why aren’t you doing glute strengthening exercises?

You can see why it’s easy to fall back on big compound moves, but there are 36 GLUTE-SPECIFIC movements to target each part of your butt. Some people – coaches included – may find that intimidating but there’s a simple way around it.

There’s a “secret” known to many models and fitness competitors who know a thing or two about sculpting a powerful butt. And it may transform how you work out.

Quite simply, they DON’T train glutes and legs together. (Why would they? They’re completely different.)

Instead, they dedicate at least two sessions per week solely to hit their glutes. Their leg days fit around that.

It makes sense when you think about it. Glutes are the biggest muscle in your body. They get to have their OWN day.

So the question is, are you serious enough about growing your butt to follow in the footsteps of fitness competitors and commit to glute-only days?

Let’s smash another myth… that super long gym workouts are required to build your backside.

We’ve already learned that you’re going to be training your glutes on their own day. You can get an extremely effective workout for one muscle group in as little as 15-minutes since you’re targeting a specific area.

Sure if someone is training their entire upper or lower body that can take some time, but a killer glute workout will be counter-productive if exceeding 15-minutes.

Secondly, if you have a gym membership that’s great but not a requirement.

There are lots of exercises you can to add resistance with your bodyweight or other common items that you can use in your workouts when exercising at home or when traveling.

If you have a gym membership that’s great, but if you don’t you can still develop your glutes with bodyweight exercises at home.

Study after study proves you can achieve serious growth through bodyweight exercises instead of heaving weights. You really can grow your glutes without setting foot in a gym (although adding resistance can speed up progress).

One study proved bodyweight exercises – hip thrusts – activated a comparable level of lower limb muscles as machine exercises . Another study suggested it was possible to improve muscle power and growth through bodyweight exercise with blood flow restriction . A further study showed muscle growth occurred without the need for resistance at all.

What these studies show are the benefits of incorporating bodyweight exercises without the injury risks associated with lifting weights.

Too much advice focuses on complicated movements that never really hit your glutes. Or the need to use 25 hard-to-find machines in your gym. I want to show you that seriously building your butt is as simple as a well-considered bodyweight plan.

There’s a catch, though. None of what I’ve talked about above will give you the results you want if you’re training a dormant muscle…

Your glutes are asleep. And the reason?

Endless studies show sitting hurts our physical health. It’s a “silent killer”. Unlike a sports injury, you don’t realize the extent of the damage done until it’s too late.

The only time we notice there could be an issue is when we sit for too long and get a numb butt. “Dead butt syndrome” or gluteal amnesia occurs when your glutes stop firing as they should.

The technical term for this is “inhibition”. When you sit for a prolonged period, your glutes aren’t activated. They get weak, and it has consequences for the rest of your body. Other muscles are forced to compensate for your glute weakness, and this may result in lower back, knee or hip pain.

They prevent your gluteal muscles from activating so you never perform at 100%. You can’t train a dormant muscle.

What’s worse is that you can suffer from this even if you exercise regularly. You can’t ‘out-exercise’ the effect of sitting.

Our muscles are dormant, so we need to wake them up. Time spent training a dormant muscle is wasted. That’s why you never get the gains you expect, despite your hard work.

When you look in the mirror wondering where your butt is and what more you can do, this is it. You need to WAKE UP your glutes.

The key to unlocking your glutes is its opposing muscle, the hip flexor. You see, sitting tightens the hip flexors preventing the glutes from firing.

To fire your glutes, we use a two-step protocol. It involves: a) dealing with tight hip flexors first and b) then re-activating the glutes.

Restorative stretching lengthens the muscle fiber to return the hip flexors to their original length.

To re-activate the glutes, we turn to a tool of physical therapists use to rehabilitate injured athletes: neuromuscular activation. This technique restores the mind-muscle link between your brain and your glutes, lost when you sit for too long and your glutes “switch off”.

Stretching and muscle activation in that order is the ONLY way to kick your glutes into action from being dormant.

The good news. It only takes an additional three to five minutes of stretches and activation exercises to hit 100% of your potential. No matter what your goal is, adding a “Wake Up Protocol” gets you there faster, safer and probably a lot easier.
